U.S. Olympic Athletes

Gerard Moreno

In 2008, Gerard Moreno traveled to Beijing to take part in his third Paralympic Games, where he competed in the men's individual foil - category B and men's individual sabre - category B. Now, Moreno has qualified to compete in his fourth Games and will don the Team USA uniform in London in 2012.

Moreno was paralyzed in 1981 as a result of a gunshot wound during a home invasion robbery. He fenced on the Epee Team for Cal State at Los Angeles before his injury.  Moreno was then reintroduced to fencing 15 years later, when his brother informed him about wheelchair fencing.

At that time, Moreno was competing in wheelchair basketball and in off-road downhill and slalom racing on the NORBA mountain bike circuit. His basketball team represented the West at the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Final Four in 2001 and he was a three-time Downhill National Champion and Dual Slalom National Champion in mountain bike events.

Moreno is married and lives in West Los Angeles, Calif. He also mentors newly injured spinal cord patients, performs fencing demonstrations and participates in wheelchair basketball clinics for junior athletes with the L.A. Clippers Chairmen.

When not training, Moreno enjoys music, traveling and outdoor sports.
