True Champions
by Danelle D'Aquanni Umstead / July 06, 2010
It is like a gambler... they speak of only what they have won. But NEVER do they speak of their losses. Well I have shared my journey this past season ...win or lose. Neither one will characterize me. The hard work, training, commitment, and trust will describe the seasons and our Victory as a team. Team Vision4Gold!
I would like to portray to you some people I know who I believe are true champions, and try to tell you a little about them.
Holidae and Blake Swan are a visually impaired husband/wife team that made the US Adaptive Development Ski Team in their 60's. Yes that is right. They are a strong visually impaired alpine race team. They are a fun, loving, committed couple who had trained hard to be the best they could be. ALWAYS.... Supporting their teammates with pleasure. Blake hurt himself pretty bad, and had to have his hips replaced. They were named to the 2010 U.S. Paralympic team but due to Blake being injured, he could not guide his wife. Holidae decided to decline getting another guide and therefore she couldn't race in the Paralympic Winter Games. She said that they started this dream together as a team, and will end it together as a team. Unbelievable loyalty!
Luba Lowery was born in a Russia. She lived in an orphanage until she was four when her adoptive mother brought her to America. Luba has Proximal Focal Femoral Disorder (PFFD) and is missing her hip sockets. She is very committed to her routine. She gets up way too early every morning to go to the gym, then goes to training and school and this dedicated athlete finishes her day in the gym again. Always smiling, and would give you her shirt off her back if you needed it. Fanatical Athlete!
Teague Cowley was in a serious car accident when he was about 10 years old. His body was severely burned, his arm and leg (on the same side) had to be amputated. This does not stop him. NO WAY!!! His abilities amaze me on a daily basis. I am probably one of his biggest fans, and support him all the way. He is a strong man, who has a dream to be in the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in alpine skiing. I believe he will. He trains hard, and does not give up.
There are so many athletes that amaze and encourage me on a daily basis. (Too many to mention,) They are not medalists, they are people who have dedicated themselves to become their personal BEST. Dream Big and follow those dreams. Disability or no disability we all have the ability to motivate, dedicate, and inspire.
