Notable finishes for U.S. Paralympic Swimmers on Last Day of Can-Ams

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – U.S. Paralympic swimmers continued to impress as the 2010 Spring Can-Am Swimming National Championships came to a close on Saturday, March 27. The U.S. took several first place finishes in men’s 100m freestyle, Cody Bureau (Latrobe, Pa.) took first place with a time of 1:00.74 in the S9 classification, while Tom Miazga (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Rudy Garcia-Tolson (Bloomington, Calif.) took first and second in the S7 classification with times of 1:08.59 and 1:08.89. First place finishes continued to roll in for the U.S. with Curtis Lovejoy S2 (Atlanta, Ga.), Mike Demarco S3 (San Diego, Calif.), Michael Hughes S6, and Tucker Dupree S12 (Raleigh, N.C.) all taking first in their respected classifications.

 

The women also had impressive finishes in the 100m freestyle. Miranda Uhl (Alachua, Fla.) snagged first place in the S6 classification with a time of 1:24.4. Breaking the American record and taking first with a time of 1:09.82 in the S7 classification was Mallory Weggermann (Eagan, Minn.) while Cortney Jordan (Henderson, Nev.) and Erin Popovich (Silverbow, Mont.) of the U.S. came in second and third. Also taking first place in the women’s 100m freestyle, were Jessica Long S8 (Baltimore, Maryland) and Kelley Becherer S13 (Sheboygan, Wis.).

 

The U.S. had notable finishes in both the 50m and 100m butterfly. Breaking the American record in the 50m butterfly was Kayla Wheeler S3 (Lynnwood, Wash.) with a time of 1:33.83 while Weggermann S7 broke the Pan-Am record with a time of 37.04.
