U.S. cyclists bring home seven medals from 2010 Para-cycling World Cup

Colorado Springs, Colo.- The 2010 Para-cycling Road World Cup took place in Segovia, Spain, June 11-13, and served as time-trials for the UCI World Para-cycling Championships occurring this August. Thirty different countries were represented, with over 300 athletes competing in the event.

Overall, Team USA proved to be fierce competition for the other countries. On Friday, in the Women's C4-5 Road Race, Jennifer Schuble (Hoover, Ala.) finished first with a time of 1:31:39. In the Women's C1, C2, and C3 Road Race, Barbara Buchan (Bend, Ore.) finished second with a time of 1:24:04.

In Saturday's competition, Oz Sanchez (San Diego, Calif.) came away with a third place finish of 1:59:44 in the Men's H-4 road race. In the Women's Tandem Road Race, Karissa Whitsell (Eugene, Ore.) and pilot Mackenzie Woodring (Grand Rapids, Mich.), finished seventh with a time of 1:43:50.

In the H-4 Men's Time Trial on Sunday, Sanchez finished first with a time of 30:30:88. In the Women's C-5 Time Trial, Schuble also finished first with a time of 30:02:73. Buchan recorded the final first place finish for the U.S. team in the Women's C-2 Time Trial finishing in 21:10:08. In the C-3 Men's division, Michael Farrell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished third with a time of 28:35:20.

Craig Griffin, who is the Associate Director of High Performance Cycling was very proud of the U.S. competitors.  Griffin said that “US Paralympics fielded a small but talented group of athletes at the inaugural UCI World Cup. Segovia hosted one of the largest and strongest events outside of the World Championships and I was surprised by the depth and strength of new talent competing. However our athletes rode fantastic, winning 7 medals over the 3 days of competition, underscoring the fact that we are on track to meet our target medal count at the World Championships in Baie Comeau Canada in August.”
