Popovich selected as U.S. flag bearer for 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships

Erin Popovich has been selected as the flag bearer for Team USA at the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships.

Eindhoven, The Netherlands.- Three-time Paralympian Erin Popovich (Silverbow, Mont.) has been selected as the Team USA flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 International Paralympic Committee Swimming World Championships. Popovich was selected by her teammates and will carry the U.S. flag into the Opening Ceremony on Saturday, August 14.

"It's very exciting to be chosen by my teammates to be the flag bearer," Popovich said. 'To be able to lead Team USA into competition is one of the highest honors in sport."

Popovich will compete in numerous individual and relay events in Eindhoven as she is slated to swim the 50m, 100m, 400m freestyle; 100m breaststroke; 50m butterfly; and 200m IM events.

Popovich is one of the most highly decorated athletes in U.S. Paralympic history, having won 14 career gold medals at the Paralympic Games. She is the current world record holder in the 200 IM (SM7) and the 4 x 100 Free relay (34 points). 

Competition at the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships will be held at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium. The championships run August 15-21.
