Team USA claims 16 medals in first two days of competition at 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships

Mallory Weggemann has three gold medals and three world records in three events; two individual awards and one in a relay event.

EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands – American swimmers let their presence be known during the first two days of competition at the Pieter Van Den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium, the site of the 2010 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships. Five new world records were posted along with 16 total medals won by Team USA.

The U.S. women came up huge on day one, as they made a one-two-three sweep in the women's 400m freestyle (S7), flanked by a new world record by Mallory Weggemann (Eagan, Minn.) with a time of 5:04.87. Weggemann broke her previous world record time of 5:12.30, which she set in July 2009. Teammates Erin Popovich (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Cortney Jordan (Henderson, Nev.) followed up with the silver and bronze in 5:22.48 and 5:25.93, respectively.

Weggemann didn't miss a beat on day two by posting a second world record and gold medal in the women's 100m breaststroke (SB6) in 1:35.51.

Jessica Long (Baltimore, Md.) also came up huge in early competition, setting a new world record in the women's 200m individual medley (SM8) in 2:38.31. Teammate Amanda Everlove (Wichita, Ks.) also added to the U.S. medal tally following up Long with the bronze in 2:52.85.

Long also won gold and set a new American record in the women's 100m backstroke (S8) with a time of 1:17.56.

Kelly Becherer (Sheboygan, Wis.) won gold in the women's 200m individual medley (SM13) in 2:30.32.

Anna Eames (Golden Valley, Minn.) won bronze in the women's100m butterfly (S10) - 1:10.52

In the women's 100m breaststroke (SB7), Erin Popovich and Jessica Long packed a one-two punch, with Popovich winning gold in 1:32.47, with Long just behind her with silver in 1:33.06.

Cheryl Angelelli (Detroit, Mich.) took silver in the 200m freestyle (S4).

And the women rounded out the end of day two competition with a gold medal and world record in the 4x100m free relay. The relay team, made up of Ashley Owens (Stockbridge, Ga.), Mallory Weggemann, Elizabeth Stone (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Jessica Long shattered the world record set by the U.S. standing since 2006 (4:30.66) with a new mark of 4:23.59.

In men's action, Roy Perkins (Del Mar, Calif.) has claimed two medals so far in the competition; he won bronze in the men's 50m freestyle (S5) in 34.45, and he also won silver in the men's 50m butterfly (S5) in 35.56.

Rudy Garcia-Tolson (Bloomington, Calif.) won bronze in the men's 100m breaststroke (SB7) with a time of 1:26.90.
