EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands – Day four of the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships resulted in another impressive haul of hardware for Team USA.  The Americans brought in 12 medals on Wednesday, increasing their overall total to 36.

Mallory Weggemann (Eagan, Minn.) continues to have an outstanding meet as she added two more medals to her collection.  Weggemann took silver in the 100m backstroke (S7) in an American record time of 1:23.39 and led a Team USA sweep of the 200m IM (SM7), winning gold in 2:48.43 – a time that smashed the previous world record by nearly six seconds.  Joining Weggemann on the medal stand were Erin Popovich (Fort Collins, Colo.), who claimed silver, and Cortney Jordan (Henderson, Nev.), who won bronze.

Kelley Becherer (Sheboygan, Wis.) and Ashley Owens (Stockbridge, Ga.) also picked up gold medals for Team USA on day four.  Becherer won the 50m freestyle (S13) while Owens took the top spot in the 400m freestyle (S10).  Susan Beth Scott (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) joined Owens on the podium in that event with Scott winning silver.

Rounding out the medals for the women were Cheryl Angelleli (Clinton Township, Mich.) and Jessica Long (Baltimore, Md.).  Angelleli won silver in the 100m freestyle (S4) and Long earned silver in the 50m freestyle (S8).

On the men’s side, Rudy Garcia-Tolson (Bloomington, Calif.) led the way by winning gold in his signature event, the 200m IM (SM7).  Garcia-Tolson is the current world record holder and defending Paralympic champion in that event.

The U.S. men also won two bronze medals on Wednesday as Tucker Dupree (Raleigh, N.C.) finished third in the 50m freestyle (S12) and Lantz Lamback (Augusta, Ga.) earned his medal in the 100m backstroke (S7).
