On Thursday, Mallory Weggemann picked up her fifth gold medal, and fifth world record, of the week.

EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands –The 2010 IPC World Championships may be winding down, but Team USA is continuing to make waves at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium. Thursday proved to be another double-digit day for the U.S., which collected 10 more medals.  The team’s total now stands at 46.

Breakout star of the meet Mallory Weggemann (Eagan, Minn.) had another phenomenal performance as she led an American sweep of the 100m freestyle (S7).  Weggemann’s time of 1:08.45 was good enough for her fifth world record and gold medal of the week.  Sharing the podium with Weggemann were Erin Popovich (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Cortney Jordan (Henderson, Nev.), who won silver and bronze, respectively.

The women claimed two other podium spots on Thursday with Jessica Long (Baltimore, Md.) winning gold in the 100m butterfly (S8) and Kelley Becherer (Sheboygan, Wis.) taking bronze in the 400m freestyle (S13).

The men contributed to half of Team USA’s medal tally on day five.  Silver medal performances came from Roy Perkins (Del Mar, Calif.) in the 200m freestyle (S5) and Phillip Scholz (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) in the 400m freestyle (S11).

Bronze medals were earned by Michael DeMarco (San Diego, Calif.) in the 50m breaststroke (SB2), Tucker Dupree (Raleigh, N.C.) in the 400m freestyle (S12) and Lantz Lamback (Augusta, Ga.) in the 100m freestyle (S7).  Lamback also set a new American record of 1:02.10 in his event.

Team USA has one day of competition remaining in the pool on Friday and the championships conclude on Saturday with the open water 5k race.
