Paralympian Marin Morrison Loses Battle with Brain Cancer

Paralympian Marin Morrison (Sammamish, Wash.), 18, passed away on January 2 after a long battle with brain cancer.  Morrison was a member of the 2008 U.S. Paralympic Swimming Team and competed in the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle and 50-meter backstroke events at the Paralympic Games in Beijing, China last September.

In an e-mail sent to friends and teammates, Morrison’s family said, “Marin was an uncommonly kind and sensitive person.  From an early age, her spiritual connection and instinct for compassion were beyond anything a parent could hope to instill in a child.  She was a loving sister and friend.”

Morrison spent parts of her childhood in Montana, Michigan, Florida and Georgia. She was an all-state swimmer her freshman year at Collins High School in Lawrenceville, Ga. She was a standout sprint freestyle and backstroke competitor for her club team, Swim Atlanta, and recorded several national top-16 times in age group competition.

Morrison is survived by her parents, Matt and Nancy; a sister, Camlyn; and a brother, Michael.
